The Five Nights at Freddy's Movie is an adaptation of the Five Nights at Freddy's series and is an upcoming science-fiction horror film based on the video game of the same name created by Scott Cawthon. It was initially estimated for a 2020 release, but no release date is confirmed as of yet. Filming was scheduled to begin Spring 2021 but was delayed because of Scott Cawthon's retirement. Production of the movie officially began around August 2022 with Emma Tammi directing, and Jim Henson's Creature Shop building the film's animatronic cast.

Synopsis[]

The terrifying horror game phenomenon becomes a blood-chilling cinematic event, as Blumhouse— the producer of M3GAN, The Black Phone and The Invisible Man— brings Five Nights at Freddy's to the big screen.

The film follows Mike Schmidt (Josh Hutcherson; Ultraman, The Hunger Games franchise) a troubled young man caring for his 10-year-old sister Abby (Piper Rubio; Holly & Ivy, Unstable), and haunted by the unsolved disappearance of his younger brother Garrett more than a decade before.

Recently fired and desperate for work so that he can keep custody of Abby, Mike agrees to take a position as a night security guard at an abandoned theme restaurant: Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria. But Mike soon discovers that nothing at Freddy's is what it seems. With the aid of Vanessa Shelly, a local police officer (Elizabeth Lail; You, Mack & Rita), Mike's nights at Freddy's will lead him into unexplainable encounters with the supernatural and drag him into the black heart of an unspeakable nightmare.

The film also stars Mary Stuart Masterson (Blindspot, Fried Green Tomatoes), as Mike's icy Aunt Jane; Kat Conner Sterling (We Have a Ghost, 9-1-1) as Abby's caring babysitter, Maxine; and Matthew Lillard (Good Girls, Scream) as Steve Raglan, Mike's smug career counselor.

Five Nights at Freddy's is directed by Emma Tammi (The Wind, Blood Moon) and is written by Scott Cawthon, Emma Tammi and Seth Cuddeback.

The film's iconic animatronic characters will be created by Jim Henson's Creature Shop.

Five Nights at Freddy's is produced by Jason Blum and Scott Cawthon. The film's executive producers are Bea Sequeira, Russell Binder, Marc Mostman and Christopher H. Warner. Universal Pictures presents a Blumhouse production, in association with Striker Entertainment.[1]

Development[]

Warner Bros. Pictures announced in April 2015 that it had acquired the series' film rights, with Roy Lee, David Katzenberg, and Seth Grahame-Smith scheduled to produce. Grahame-Smith said that they would collaborate with Cawthon "to make an insane, terrifying and weirdly adorable movie".[2] In July 2015, Gil Kenan signed to direct the adaptation and co-write it with Tyler Burton Smith.[3]

In January 2017, Cawthon said that due to "problems within the movie industry as a whole", the film "was met with several delays and roadblocks" and was "back at square one". He promised "to be involved with the movie from day one this time, and that's something extremely important to me. I want this movie to be something that I'm excited for the fanbase to see."[4][5] Cawthon tweeted a picture of a chair with the name "Freddy" with the Blumhouse Productions logo in March of that year, implying that the film has a new production company.[6][7] Producer Jason Blum confirmed the news two months later, saying that he was excited about working closely with Cawthon on the adaptation.[8] In June 2017, Kenan said that he was no longer directing the film after Warner Bros. Pictures' turnaround.[9] It was announced in February 2018 that Chris Columbus would direct and write the film, also producing it with Blum and Cawthon.[10]

In August 2018, Cawthon announced that the script's first draft (involving the events of the first game) was completed and a second and third film were possible.[11] That month, Blum tweeted that the film was planned for a 2020 release.[12] In November 2018, Cawthon announced that the film's script had been scrapped and the film would be further delayed.[13] On September 2019, the script for the movie has been confirmed to be finished. In June 2020, Blum said in an interview that the film is in super active development, and that it's moving rapidly forward, but that he doesn't want to put a timeline on it.[14] In November 2020, Cawthon stated in a Reddit post that the screenplay had been chosen and that filming will start in Spring 2021, around March. Included was a list of scrapped screenplays with a small description of each and why they were ultimately eliminated.

With the script complete, development on the movie officially began around August 2022, with Jim Henson's Creature Shop being recruited for animatronic design. On December 2022, the actors who played the main characters were revealed (Matthew Lillard as William Afton, Josh Hutcherson as Mike Schmidt, Piper Rubio as Abby and Mary Stuart Masterson as an unnamed villain).

The three-week shooting for the film began on February 1, 2023, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and wrapped on April 3, 2023.

On April 5th, 2023, Blum tweeted that the FNaF movie would be released on October 27, 2023.[15]

On April 28th, 2023, YouTuber Cris Parker brought attention to an official leaked two-paragraph synopsis of the film.[16]

On May 6th, 2023, an unfinished trailer for the film was leaked by an early testing surveyor. Leaks of the trailer were taken down by Universal and Blumhouse, and Cawthon released a statement regarding the leak, praising fans who chose to not view and re-post the leaked footage.

On May 16th, 2023, Blum (along with Blumhouse Productions) tweeted out the first official poster for the FNaF movie and re-affirmed the release date to be October 27th, 2023. The poster also revealed the movie's tagline: "CAN YOU SURVIVE".[17] Individual posters for Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy were later tweeted out by the official Blumhouse Productions account.[18][19][20][21] On the same day, the first teaser trailer for the film was released on Blum's Twitter page and later on the official Blumhouse YouTube channel.

On June 27th, 2023, the official trailer for the movie was released by Blumhouse.

On August 30th, 2023, the second official trailer for the movie was released by Blumhouse.

Plot[]

At Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place, a once-successful but now abandoned family entertainment center, a night guard desperately attempts to flee the building but is captured by a red pirate-themed fox animatronic and strapped to a device which plants an empty animatronic head onto him by brutally mutilating his face, killing him.

After assaulting a negligent father whom he mistook for a kidnapper, mall security guard Mike Schmidt is sent to visit career counselor Steve Raglan. He offers Mike a job as a night guard at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Though initially reluctant, Mike accepts the offer after social services threaten to take custody of his younger sister Abby and pass her over to their estranged aunt Jane, whose motive is a monthly paycheck from the state due to custody of Abby.

On his first night, Mike falls asleep and dreams about his brother Garrett's kidnapping and presumed murder, before seeing five children who witnessed it; when Mike tries to approach them, they run away. On the second night, Mike's dream is repeated, but when he attempts to confront one of the children, he is attacked and wakes up. Mike meets police officer Vanessa Shelly, who notices his wounds and patches him up. Vanessa shows him around the restaurant and tells him that it closed in the 1980s after five children were murdered there; their bodies were never found.

Jane hires a group of juvenile delinquents to vandalize the restaurant in order to get Mike fired, an act which would enable her to gain custody of Abby. As the break-in occurs, the restaurant's animatronic mascots — Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica, Foxy, and Mr. Cupcake — come alive and slaughter the delinquents. Among the vandals is Abby's babysitter Max, whose death results in Mike having to bring Abby to his next shift.

On the third night, the animatronics come alive and befriend Abby, but are hostile towards Mike. He discovers that the animatronics are possessed by the ghosts of the murdered children, whose leader, a blonde boy, consistently mentions a "yellow rabbit." On the fourth night, Abby is injured while she, Mike, and Vanessa are bonding with the animatronics. During her recovery, Vanessa learns Mike is attempting to identify Garrett's kidnapper, and warns him to not bring Abby to the restaurant again. Mike gets Jane to babysit Abby, much to her frustration, as he goes back to the restaurant during the day and overdoses on sleeping pills.

Inside the dream, the five children appear again and tell Mike that he can stay with Garrett forever, in exchange for Abby. During the fifth night, a damaged yellow Freddy animatronic, possessed by the blonde boy, kills Jane and takes Abby back to the restaurant by hitching a ride with a taxi driver. Mike is repeatedly attacked in his dream and wakes up strapped to the animatronics' torture device. He escapes by removing pins that the previous deceased security guard had loosened, but is severely wounded by Foxy.

Vanessa finds Mike and treats his injuries; after Mike explains his dream, Vanessa reveals that she is the daughter of William Afton, a serial killer who murdered Garrett and the five children by hiding their bodies in the animatronics, and that their souls are under his control. Realizing that William is planning to murder Abby, Mike rushes to the restaurant with the necessary equipment to disable the animatronics. At the restaurant, Chica attempts to kill Abby, but Mike arrives and saves her. Mike is attacked by Mr. Cupcake and separated from Abby. The animatronics are eventually defeated, but they are reactivated by Steve, who arrives wearing the "yellow rabbit" suit as he reveals himself to be William before knocking Mike unconscious.

Knowing that the animatronics need to understand the truth, Abby draws a picture of William murdering the children. Vanessa attempts to stop William from interceding with the plan, but is stabbed in the abdomen. Before William can kill Mike, Abby shows her drawing to the animatronics, and they turn on William. Mr. Cupcake bites off part of the suit, triggering its internal springlock mechanisms and fatally wounding William. The animatronics drag him into a back room as Mike and Abby carry a wounded Vanessa out of the restaurant; she falls into a coma afterwards and is taken to a hospital. Mike continues to look after Abby as they return to their normal lives. During the end credits, a distorted voice spells out "Come find me."

Trivia[]

  • The 2019 science-fiction comedy-horror film The Banana Splits Movie, based on the Hanna-Barbera TV show, is speculated to be a reworking of the original Five Nights at Freddy's film Warner Bros. was supposed to work on before the rights went to Blumhouse Productions.
  • The 2021 action-comedy horror-thriller film Willy's Wonderland appears to have a similar plot line to the Five Nights at Freddy's video games, but the writer and director of the film deny any resemblance.
  • This film was Blumhouse Productions' first ever video game film.
  • In an interview with Jason Blum, it was revealed that the film is currently Blumhouse Productions' top priority.
  • On September 1, 2020, it was revealed that Jason Blum is using MatPat's Five Nights at Freddy's theory videos as research for the film.
  • Jason Blum claimed that it is possible that Five Nights at Freddy's fan Jamie Lee Curtis from the Halloween franchise might be in the film.[47]
  • On Jack Black's TikTok page, he has been doing Five Nights at Freddy's-related stuff, hinting that he might be a part of the movie.[48]
    • He and his son also played Five Nights at Freddy's 4 (Halloween Edition) on Markiplier's channel to celebrate the 2015 Goosebumps film, which Black starred in.
  • On November 20, 2020, Scott Cawthon made a post on the official Five Nights at Freddy's subreddit, where he revealed that multiple screenplays were considered, as well as explaining why those screenplays were rejected.[49]
  • Scott Cawthon revealed that the plot of the movie will be based around a man named Mike and his connection to Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. It's likely that the protagonist is Michael Afton as his father, William Afton, was the murderer of the five children and co-founder of Fazbear Entertainment.
    • It is also likely that the man in question is Mike Schmidt from the first game in the series.
  • The game is filled with numerous references to the game
    • The opening scene is reference to game over when the anatomic catch the player and stuff them in a Freddy suit. It is applied when Mike sees some of Jeff’s gang stuffed in suits after being killed.
    • The opening credits use 8-bit style similar to the mini-games
    • Steve Raglan mentioning the power being wonky is likely a reference to the first game’s limited power supply. The power going out later on likely references power going out when you run out of power.
    • A poster of "Celebrate" from the first game can be seen in the office
    • Mike switching through the cameras is like the first game but however the process is shown with pressing buttons here
    • Jeff’s demise to Foxy is a reference to first game of Foxy sprinting the office to get the player. His Diddleedum can be heard before it happened as Roxy cornered Jeff.
    • Maxine’s death to Freddy is a reference to the infamous bite of 87 though unlike in game where only the head is bitten half her body is bitten off. It could also be applied to Carl’s demise to Mr. Cupcake’s bite could also be reference to bite of 87 too.
    • William Afton’s Yellow Rabbit suit after being withered away resemble Springtrap mainly the head and demise to springlocks is reference to his demise in Five Nights at Freddy’s 3
      • It means he will likely return as Springtrap in future installments
